Peter Habib, DO
General and Bariatric Surgeon
Dr. Peter Habib is a fellowship-trained general surgeon who founded the Michigan Institute of Surgery (MIS) on a commitment to whole-person care, clinical innovation, and regional surgical access. Designed as a specialized clinical entity, MIS delivers high-acuity surgical expertise and metabolic infrastructure directly to community and rural health settings—eliminating the need for patients to travel long distances for complex care.
Dr. Habib completed his medical training at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, followed by a general surgery residency at Corewell Health / Beaumont Hospital (Farmington Hills) and a specialized fellowship in Minimally Invasive, Advanced GI, and Bariatric Surgery at the Chicago Institute of Advanced Surgery.
In addition to leading MIS, Dr. Habib serves as Director of Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery at Aspire Rural Health. In this role, he acts as a clinical architect—building and launching Aspire's dedicated local bariatric surgical program, performing the health system's first bariatric procedure, and establishing local multidisciplinary care pipelines that keep patients close to home.

Philosophy of Care & Technology
Osteopathic & Systems-Based Care: Grounded in osteopathic principles, Dr. Habib views surgery not as an isolated technical event, but as a vital catalyst within a broader, systems-based approach to metabolic health. His philosophy focuses on long-term disease remission, sustainable health restoration, and physiology optimization.
Thoughtful Technology Integration: Dr. Habib leverages modern technology and clinical workflow tools (including advanced imaging, robotic platforms, and clinical AI) to enhance precision and streamline communication—always serving to strengthen, never replace, the direct doctor-patient relationship.
